About Me

Professional Background:

I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). This is an internationally recognised qualification and gold standard for lactation professionals. I am also a Registered Nurse with a special interest in paediatric and neonatal care. Prior to becoming an IBCLC I volunteered as a Breastfeeding Counsellor with the Australian Breastfeeding Association helping many mums and babies overcome breastfeeding challenges to meet their breastfeeding goals.

Personal Background:

I am mother to three children, each of whom varied widely in their breastfeeding. My first took to the breast with ease. I wondered what all these women were talking about when they spoke of feeding difficulties. My second baby was the complete opposite. It took me many weeks and seeking the support of numerous professionals to uncover the cause of her feeding challenges. Along the way I was told countless times that either there was no problem or that perhaps I simply couldn’t breastfeed. Having successfully breastfed a previous baby I knew that this time something was wrong and that this was not what breastfeeding was meant to look or feel like. Once we resolved the issue I went on to breastfeed her until shortly before her third birthday. It was this experience that sparked the passion to support other mothers in their breastfeeding journeys and provide the needed support. Had she been my first baby I would have been led to believe I couldn’t breastfeed. I strongly believe that no woman “fails” to breastfeed, rather services fail to support women.

Breastfeeding my third child has been a different experience again but this time I had the skills and knowledge to overcome any challenge thrown at us. Having had three very different experiences has given me true insight into how much things can vary. I want to make sure women feel their concerns are heard and treat all experiences as unique and individual.
